Care, cleaning & longevity for coffee gear

Coffee gear rewards the pedantic. The difference between a great brew at year one and year five is entirely about cleaning.

Everyday care

  • Rinse metal filters and Aeropress plungers immediately — coffee oil is the enemy of flavour and metal.
  • Grinders: brush out the burr chamber daily; stale grounds oxidise and taint the next shot.
  • Wipe milk jugs, portafilters and steam wands after every use, not at end of session.

Deep clean

  • Cafetiere / French press: unscrew the mesh assembly weekly, soak in warm soapy water — the grit stuck between the plates is where old bitterness lives.
  • Espresso machines: back-flush with a blind basket and a pinch of Cafiza (or equivalent) weekly.
  • Grinders: blast a handful of Grindz (rice pellets are the DIY equivalent) through monthly to strip oil off the burrs.

Longevity tips

  • Descale espresso boilers every 2-3 months with citric acid or a proprietary descaler — hard water kills more machines than mechanical failure.
  • Aeropress rubber plungers dry out; a drop of food-safe silicone grease once a year restores the seal (or just buy a $6 replacement).
  • Store grinders in low humidity; retained coffee dust plus moisture equals cake.
When to replace

Grinder burrs have lost their edge (retention doubles, grind is inconsistent) or the espresso boiler leaks after descaling — both are 5-10 year jobs, not annual.
