Stasher vs beeswax wraps vs stainless containers: food storage bench test

Quick answer
If you buy one thing to replace cling film, make it a Stasher stand-up bag. It seals, it freezes, it takes a dishwasher, and it did not change at all across 50 wash cycles. Stainless containers are the better answer for packed lunches and fridge leftovers because they never hold odour. Beeswax wraps are a genuinely good product doing a narrow job — covering bowls, wrapping bread and hard cheese — and a bad answer for anything wet.
Match the tool to the food
Most disappointment in this category comes from expecting one product to do everything. Wet and raw goes in silicone. Leftovers and lunch go in stainless. Dry, breathable things go in wax. Cling film only felt universal because it was disposable, and we accepted its failures.
Where each one wobbles
Silicone holds a faint memory of strong food. It is not a defect and it clears with bicarb and sunlight, but if you cook a lot of curry you will notice. Stainless is odour-proof and effectively immortal, but the silicone-lidded square is splash proof rather than truly sealed, so do not carry soup upright and hope.
Beeswax wraps age visibly. Ours lost noticeable wax across 50 washes. Re-waxing in a low oven takes ten minutes and restores them almost fully, which is the difference between a one-year product and a five-year one.
The cost picture
The full set is not cheap, and buying it all at once is the wrong move. Start with two silicone bags, add one stainless container, and only buy wraps if you already know you cover bowls often. Two well-used items beat a drawer of good intentions.
Our take
Stasher takes the win because it does the most jobs well and shows no sign of ageing. But this is the most complementary category in our database — the correct answer for most kitchens is two of these three, not one.
How we tested

Frequently asked
- Are silicone food bags better than beeswax wraps?
- For anything wet, frozen or raw, yes. Silicone seals, freezes and washes hot. Beeswax wraps are better for covering a bowl, wrapping cheese or bread, and nothing that leaks.
- Do silicone bags hold onto smells?
- Slightly. After 24 hours of curry and a normal wash, our bags held a faint residual odour that disappeared after a bicarb soak and a day in sunlight.
- How long do beeswax wraps last?
- About a year of regular use before the wax thins. They can be refreshed in a low oven with grated wax, which is a genuinely worthwhile ten-minute job rather than a marketing claim.
- What is the best reusable alternative to cling wrap?
- A silicone stand-up bag, specifically from Stasher, is the most versatile direct alternative to cling wrap. Based on our bench testing, these bags seal, freeze, and survive the dishwasher flawlessly, showing zero signs of degradation even after 50 wash cycles. While they can retain faint food odours, they outperform other reusables for wet foods and freezer storage, making them the most practical single switch for households looking to phase out disposable plastics.
- Can you put soup in stainless steel lunch boxes?
- No, we do not recommend using stainless steel containers for liquids like soup. Our long-term testing showed that while stainless steel is incredibly durable and completely odour-proof, containers with silicone press-on lids are splash-proof rather than completely leakproof. Carrying soup upright in a bag is a recipe for spills. For wet or liquid meals, a high-quality sealed silicone bag is a much safer, leak-free choice.
- How do you fix worn out beeswax wraps?
- You can easily restore worn beeswax wraps by melting new wax onto them in a low oven for ten minutes. Our bench testing revealed that wraps lose a noticeable amount of wax after 50 washes, which makes them lose their stickiness. Taking ten minutes to re-wax them not only restores their performance almost fully, but it also extends their usable lifespan from a single year up to five years of kitchen service.
- What should you not wrap in beeswax food wraps?
- You should never use beeswax wraps for wet foods, raw meats, or juicy leftovers. Our bench testing confirmed that beeswax wraps are a specialised, breathable tool best reserved for dry items like bread, hard cheeses, or covering bowls. Because they cannot handle hot water or heavy scrubbing without melting their wax coating, they are a poor choice for anything wet, messy, or prone to harbouring bacteria.
- Which reusable food storage material is best for leftovers?
- Stainless steel containers are the best choice for storing fridge leftovers and packed lunches. Our long-term testing highlighted that stainless steel is completely odour-proof and effectively immortal, unlike silicone which can retain faint food smells over time. While stainless containers aren't perfectly leakproof for soups, their durability and resistance to food staining make them the most practical, hygienic daily workhorse for standard dry or solid leftovers.
- How many reusable food containers should I start with?
- We recommend starting small with just two silicone bags and one stainless steel container. Our bench testing shows that trying to replace all plastic wrap at once leads to unused kitchen clutter. Beginning with these three specific items allows you to cover wet foods and freezer storage (silicone) alongside lunches and smelly leftovers (stainless steel), letting you test what actually suits your cooking habits before investing in more.
