Lead-free reusable drinkware: which brands confirm it, and which stay quiet
Almost every vacuum-insulated bottle, flask and cup has a small dot at the base of the outer wall. That is where the air was drawn out and the vacuum sealed shut. The industry has historically sealed that port with a solder pellet, and the cheapest, most reliable pellet for the job contains lead. It sits under a stainless cap, outside the drinking chamber — but it is there, and it is the single question about reusable drinkware that people most want a straight answer to. So we asked. This is what each brand in our catalogue would and would not put on the record.

Why there is lead in drinkware at all
Vacuum insulation works by pulling the air out of the cavity between two stainless walls. That air has to leave through a port, and the port has to be sealed permanently, with something that flows at low temperature, wets stainless cleanly and never cracks as the vessel is heated and chilled thousands of times. Lead-bearing solder does all four things cheaply. That is the entire reason it is used — not flavour, not strength, cost and reliability.
On a well-made bottle that pellet is then covered by a welded or crimped stainless cap. It sits on the outside of the outer wall, separated from your drink by two layers of steel and a vacuum. The exposure risk in normal use is not the drinking water. The risk is that the base cap comes off — through a hard drop, corrosion, or a manufacturing fault — and the pellet is exposed to hands, benches and mouths.
Stanley confirmed publicly in January 2024 that it uses an industry-standard sealing pellet containing lead, covered by a stainless layer. They were not doing anything unusual; they were the brand that got asked. Most of the industry has been doing the same thing for decades. What has changed since is that a handful of manufacturers moved to lead-free sealing — and those are the ones now willing to say so.
Special note: the brands that have not confirmed lead-free
We contacted every drinkware brand in our catalogue and asked one question: *is there any lead anywhere in this product, including the vacuum sealing pellet?* We accepted a written statement, a published materials page or a test certificate. We did not accept "our products are food safe", because food safety standards do not cover the outside of the base cap.
Confirmed lead-free, on the record

- HuskeeCup — a single-wall reclaimed coffee-husk composite. No vacuum cavity, no sealing port, no pellet. Also no insulation, which is the trade.
Not confirmed at time of publication
- Chilly's — food-grade 18/10 stainless is documented, but we could not obtain an on-record statement about the sealing pellet in the vacuum cavity. This is not a finding of lead. It is a finding of silence, and we report it as such.

What we could and could not test ourselves
We are an editorial site with a bench, not an accredited laboratory. We can inspect a base cap under magnification, we can tell you whether a sealing dot is exposed or covered, and we can run consumer-grade lead swabs on the exterior surfaces you actually touch. We cannot destructively assay a solder pellet, and we will not present a swab result as laboratory analysis. Where our evidence stops, we say so.
Every vessel in this test passed a surface swab on the base, lip and interior. That tells you the surfaces you contact are not shedding lead. It does not tell you what is sealed underneath a cap that is still intact — which is exactly why the brand's own statement matters more than anything we can do here.
How to check a bottle you already own
- Turn it over. If the base is a smooth, uninterrupted stainless dome with no cap, disc or dot, there is likely no accessible sealing point.
- If there is a circular cap or plug at the centre of the base, that is the vacuum seal cover. Leave it alone. Do not pry, sand or drill it.
- If that cap is missing, loose, or has been damaged in a drop, stop using the vessel — regardless of brand.
- Ask the manufacturer the specific question: *what material seals the vacuum port?* A brand that has gone lead-free will answer immediately, because it cost them money to do it and they want the credit.
What we would buy
If lead-free is your deciding factor and you want insulation, buy the Fressko Camino 340ml for coffee or the Fressko Flask 500ml for all-day drinking. Both are confirmed lead-free, both survived our 200-cycle wash simulation with no retention loss, and both sell replacement seals so the cup outlives its gaskets.

How we tested
We asked each brand a single written question — is there any lead anywhere in this product, including the vacuum sealing pellet — and accepted only a written statement, a published materials page, or a test certificate as confirmation. On the bench we inspected each base under 10x magnification, photographed the sealing cap, and ran consumer-grade rhodizonate lead swabs on the base exterior, drinking lip and interior wall after a 60°C water soak. Swabs indicate exposed surface lead only; they are not laboratory assay and we have not destructively tested any sealing pellet. Products were bought at retail.

- Is it dangerous to drink from a bottle with a lead sealing pellet?
- In normal use the pellet sits on the outside of the outer wall, under a stainless cap and separated from your drink by two steel layers and a vacuum, so it does not contact liquid. The risk case is a damaged or missing base cap after a hard drop or corrosion. If the cap on your bottle is loose, cracked or gone, stop using it regardless of brand.
