Quick answer
Buy the Baggu Standard. It took 12kg without complaint, folds to something you will genuinely keep in a pocket, washed five times with no change, and costs twenty-two dollars. The Sea to Summit Nano Daypack is the one to add if you travel. The Crescent is a handsome daily bag rather than a grocery bag, and the Rume is fine for light top-up shops.
Why folded size matters more than capacity
Every bag here holds enough. The variable that decides whether a tote gets used is whether it was with you when you needed it, and that comes down to folded volume. The Baggu and the Nano both disappear into a jacket pocket. The Crescent does not fold, so it only works if it is already the bag you are carrying.
The load test was the separator
Twelve kilograms is a real grocery shop, and it is where cheap totes reveal themselves. Both the Baggu Standard and the Nano held with no measurable seam movement. The Rume strained visibly at the base seam — it will not fail today, but it is not the bag for a fortnightly big shop.
