Quick answer
For studio yoga, buy the Manduka PRO 6mm and stop shopping. For hot yoga where sweat matters, the Manduka eKO Cork grips better as you sweat. Both cost more upfront and dramatically less per year.
The three specs that matter
- Thickness — 6mm is the studio default. 4mm is more portable. Thicker mats are kinder to knees; thinner mats are more stable in standing poses.
- Grip — a mat that slides in downward dog is not a mat, it is a hazard. Read grip reviews, not marketing copy.
- Longevity — PVC PRO mats last decades. Cheap TPE and cork mats last 1–3 years.
The PVC question
Manduka's PRO uses PVC, which is not biodegradable — but the tradeoff is a lifetime warranty. A mat you use for 25 years has a lower per-year footprint than three "sustainable" mats you replace every 3 years. Buy the mat that will not be replaced.
The break-in period
New PRO mats are famously slippery. Wet the mat, rub sea salt into the surface for 15 minutes, rinse, air dry. Grip transforms overnight.
