Cotton vs jute vs polyester: what a tote bag actually costs the planet

Sam Ojo · Published July 27, 2026

Our recommended picks

Frequently asked

So are cotton totes actually bad for the environment?
Only if you own many and rarely use them. Used regularly for 2–3 years, a cotton tote comfortably beats single-use plastic across every environmental measure.
What's the best material for daily use?
For daily grocery use, ripstop nylon or polypropylene wins on durability-per-gram. Cotton wins on washability and aesthetics.
Can I recycle old cotton totes?
Yes, through textile recovery programs like Upparel in Australia. Never bin them — cotton in landfill methanises.
How many times do you need to reuse an organic cotton tote?
You need to reuse an organic cotton tote bag at least 149 times to offset its climate impact compared to a single-use plastic bag. This figure comes from the Danish Environmental Protection Agency's 2018 life-cycle assessment. While media reports often cited a much higher figure of 20,000 uses, that number accounted for total environmental impacts like water and land use, rather than greenhouse gas emissions alone. For conventional cotton, a UK study puts the break-even target at 131 uses.
Why does organic cotton require more reuses than conventional cotton?
Organic cotton bags require about 20% more uses to break even environmentally because organic farming has a lower crop yield per hectare. This means organic cultivation requires more land and water to produce the same amount of fibre as conventional farming. According to the 2018 Danish EPA study, this lower yield increases the initial environmental footprint of the bag, meaning you must commit to using it for longer to offset its production.
How long does it take to offset a reusable tote bag?
It takes approximately three years of weekly shopping to offset the climate impact of a standard cotton tote bag. Based on environmental life-cycle data, a bag needs about 150 uses to break even. If a household regularly rotates a small stash of four to five favourite bags for their weekly groceries, each bag will hit this target in around 150 weeks. Our long-term testing shows keeping bags in your car boot is the best way to ensure they get used.
Are jute shopping bags better than cotton totes?
Jute bags are highly durable and biodegradable, making them excellent heavy-duty market bags, but they are less practical than cotton for daily use in humid climates. Jute fibres absorb water easily and become heavy when wet, and they struggle to dry in hot, damp conditions like tropical Australia. Based on our hands-on testing, we recommend jute for dry car-to-market trips, but prefer machine-washable cotton or lightweight, packable nylon bags like Baggu for everyday errands.
Can you wash woven polypropylene green shopping bags?
No, you should not wash woven polypropylene green bags in hot water, as the heat will warp the synthetic plastic material. While polypropylene bags have a very low climate cost—requiring only 11 uses to break even according to UK research—they are made from fossil fuels and cannot be easily sanitised. For carrying fresh produce or damp items, our testing team prefers machine-washable fabrics like cotton or packable polyester that can survive regular hot washes without degrading.
What features make a reusable tote bag actually worth buying?
The best reusable tote bags feature a reinforced base, interior pockets, packability, and machine-washable fabrics. These design elements ensure you actually use the bag instead of letting it sit in a drawer. Our bench testing indicates that a bag that folds down to pocket size, like the Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil, is much easier to keep on hand. Additionally, having a machine-washable bag means you can safely carry fresh produce without hygiene concerns.
